One bag of coal is lasting us three days in this weather and that is approximately £3 per day to heat the boat. The fire is kept in for the whole 24 hours, the central heating is switched on for an hour, or two occasionally, each morning. This heats the water and provides a background of heat throughout Caxton by which time the wood burner/stove does the rest. Normally we would also be burning wood we have gathered but our supplies are completely depleted so for now it is all coal.
Our frozen-in state means we are back to managing the use of water but like all the other boaters caught in these conditions we are coping. As we are expecting a temperature of -9 tonight, the dogs have acquired two new 'blankies' for their beds today, care of their Dad, we are getting out the winceyette jim-jams, flanalette sheets and bobble hats for tonight! If you don't hear from me tomorrow - we have frozen to death...

Should we despatch the rescue dogs with associated kegs of medicinal brandy? :-)

Silly question Sue - All come and we can keep the brandy warm together!
