Wilmcote to Dicks Lane Lock

Caxton Moored at Wilmcote
We pulled pins at 8.40 this morning - MR had slipped away 30minutes earlier!!!  No, I couldn't believe either.  Our aim is to get up through the Lapworth locks ahead of the first stoppages on the 8th November so it was 15 locks today, and a nine mile walk and it will be 22 locks tomorrow and a three mile walk, so easy day then...

This house is at the wharf at Wilmcote and the detail of the lead work around the bay windows, topped by a balcony on the first floor and yet more lead work on the 2nd floor is really quite attractive.

Autumn - leaf soup, taken last night from the side hatch window
 Approaching the Edstone Aqueduct
 Off he goes..
Typical canal scene near Wooton Wawen
Preston Bagot Lock cottage, greatly extended as you can see.
All new sandstone coping stones in situ and sheeted against the elements - that was not a cheap repair..
 Bucket lock cottage
I am reliably informed by Amanda that this is Lengthsmans Cottage and is owned by the Landmark Trust.
I cannot recall the name of this lock cottage but it is more authentic.  Many of the other barrel  roofed lock cottages have trebled in size from their original design.
Ahhh...

Ooh, let us know what the cider house is like - we've always fancied stopping there but the timing hasn't been right.

Now, important question, is the Reliant Robin still suspended in the tree in one of the Stratford lock cottage gardens?

Hi Lesley

Now I can answer something for you! The unnamed barrel roofed cottage is called Lengthsman's Cottage and is owned by the Landmark Trust

http://bookings.landmarktrust.org.uk/BuildingDetails/Overview/189/Lengthsmans_Cottage

We stayed there for a weekend last year with our friends - the ones who have put a deposit down on their boat and sent us with the 20 questions for you!

It is a great place to stay. Very authentic inside which is what the Landmark aim to do with any buildings they rescue. Sadly that stretch of canal was shut so although we were right next to the canal and a lock no narrowboats. We too enjoyed a pie and a pint at the Fleur de Lys.

I bet the canals look fabulous this time of year with all the autumn colours.

Where are you heading now?

HI Amanda
Thank you for the information I will amend my post now. The canals do indeed look glorious with the autumn leaves falling though there are mutterings from Joe and Graham about the leaf soup they are travelling through - lots of reverse thrust to get rid of the build up. We are heading towards Brum or Worcester now, Christmas in Stourport probably but it is all rather fluid..
Take care
Lesley
