This is the R.Soar as it enters Barrow-upon-Soar.
The Weir stream that takes the River on is route below the town whilst the canal continues through the town to the Barrow Deep Lock where River and canal are reunited.

Wow! That looks a bit fierce! One wonders how the original horse boaters tackled such conditions (and worse, I have no doubt).
